On April 1st, 2020 - The U.S. FDA announced it is requesting the manufacturers of prescription Zantac and over-the-counter ranitidine withdraw their drugs from the market immediately. This recent step is the latest in an ongoing investigation of a pollutant known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in ranitidine medications (frequently known and sold by the brand name Zantac).
The FDA has determined some impurities in ranitidine products increases over time when stored at higher than room temperatures and may result in unacceptable levels of this impurity to the consumer. Due to the immediate market withdrawal, ranitidine products will no longer be available for new or previous prescriptions or over-the-counter use in the U.S. Prompted by information provided from third-party laboratories, additional FDA testing and evaluation confirmed that NDMA levels in ranitidine increase under normal storage conditions, and at higher than room temperatures, NDMA samples were found to increase significantly. Additionally, the FDA expressed concerns over the temperatures the product may be exposed to during transportation and handling by consumers. In addition, testing showed the older the product is the higher the level of NDMA. These conditions have been known to raise the level above the acceptable daily intake limit of NDMA. Patients currently taking prescription ranitidine should speak with their physician about new treatment options before ending the medicine use. There are numerous ranitidine alternatives approved for the same or comparable uses as Zantac that do not carry the same NDMA risks. To date, the FDA’s testing has not found NDMA in cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), esomeprazole (Nexium), omeprazole (Prilosec) or lansoprazole (Prevacid). Lundy Lundy Soileau & South is currently investigating reports of esophageal cancer, stomach/gastric cancer, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, and liver cancer related to Zantac use.
