Jurors in the first federal court trial against international herbicide manufacturing giant Monsanto’s found that Roundup was the probable cause of a Sonoma County cancer victims non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After a two-week trial, six San Francisco jurors deliberated nearly four days before arriving at a unanimous decision that 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman had proven that the Roundup he used to kill poison oak on his 56-acre property was the probable cause of his cancer. Today, Wednesday 21, 2019, jurors will hear evidence on whether Monsanto’s is legally responsible Edwin Hardeman’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This is one of 3 trials scheduled before U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria that could establish settlement guidelines on roughly 760 national cases that have transferred to his court. There are over 10,000 cases pending elsewhere. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (a branch of the World Health Organization) found that Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, was a probable cause of cancer in humans. However, the United State Environmental Protection Agency as well as regulatory agencies in other countries found glyphosate safe and remains legal here and abroad. Now a subsidiary of German pharmaceutical company Bayer AG, Monsanto held the initial patent and remains the dominant distributor.
